09/05/02 - Do You Know the Rules?
A player’s ball comes to rest against a chain link fence which serves as the out of bounds marker. He is not entitled to free relief and can not swing at the ball cleanly without hitting the fence. What are the player’s options?

A. Take an unplayable lie and drop the ball in accordance with Rule 28 under the penalty of one stroke.
B. Replay the last shot as a lost ball under the penalty of stroke and distance.
C. Strike the chain link fence from the back side of the fence to move the ball away from the fence.

A minute later they find his original ball. What is the ruling?

A. Play his original ball w/o penalty
B. Play the ball he dropped from behind the hazard
C. Replay his last shot under Penalty of Stroke & distance

Things Are Changing Around Here
06/24/02 - I have just (finally!) completed changing web hosting companies. This is good news in that it will result in a reduced amount of work required to maintain the web site from week to week. Of course, you are justified in your skepticism based on the currentness (or lack thereof) of the scores, handicaps, etc. Mostly this is due to my schedule being hammered lately both at home and at JSC. I hope to be slacking off soon which will result in more timely updates to the site! Keep an eye out!

Weather Today
05/28/02 - The weather today looks questionable. However, please go to the course before you make the determination to play or not. It may be raining at NASA and not at all out at Magnolia. We can play in light rain (just like the pros!). If the course is open, we should be able to play. Naturally, they won't let us play if course conditions are bad or if lightning is in the area.

Closest to the Pin
5/26/02 - Many, if not all, of you may have noticed that there was a "Closest to the Hole" (CTTH) marker on hole number 6 last Tuesday. Our league doesn't really have prizes or money for rewarding such accuracy so I thought we'd just start having the contest weekly and keep track of it through out the season. Then at the end of the season, we would try to find something to reward the person with the most "CTTH Points." Perhaps everyone in the league could keep their eyes and ears open for people or businesses who might be willing to donate a prize (gift certificate, size 44D Long plaid sports jacket, etc.) to the CTTH bounty! Okay, I'll keep thinking about how to make it worth while.

In the mean time, congratulations goes to Paul Jay Morelli, III of team Sir Hacks-a-Lot for winning this past week. Rounding out the top 4 on the card in increasing distance from the hole were Bill Bluethmann, Juan Martinez, and Jim Fox.

A Very "Wirt"hy Cause
05/11/02 - On May 14th, league member Bob Wirt will play 100 holes of golf at Battleground as a fund raiser for the Center for Pregnancy in Friendswood, TX. This center sees between 30 to 60 women each month and are there to provide love, support and counseling. If interested in pledging support per hole for this event contact Bob at 281-332-4756 or page him at 281-279-5636. Let's lend our support to Bob in this worthy cause.

Sum Updates for You
5/1/02 - The Schedule page and Standings page have been upadated with last night's results and next week's schedule. The updated handicap data for members and subs will be forthcoming before Tuesday.

Whether or not you like it, that's the weather!
4/30/02 - Forecast for today - Hot (feels like 96 deg.), Humid (60%+), Windy (from the South at 13mph - gusting to 90mph! - hit 'em low boys!), UV index - Very High (but it depends on where you look on the page!

Protect yourself from the sun (and no, I don't mean that we should all take turns standing in the shade on Lone Pine!).

Opening Day Jitters?
4/25/02 - Well, that wasn't really that bad. I think that most everyone enjoyed themselves. And there were no injuries that I know of. We did have a rocky start but I don't think that will happen again. We should be able to get off closer to 5:00 from now on.

The handicaps are going to be different for most people for a couple of weeks since we are changing courses with a different rating and slope. I'll also start posting the scores on the web page (like last year) some time in the near future (when the handicaps settle down).

The match, standings, and handicap info will continue to be posted on the back of the range ball dispenser until we find a better place to post it.

Remember that any sub that plays for you MUST be established with the league BEFORE the day of play. If they are a new sub and they haven't talked to me prior to the day they play, their handicap will be a 0. That sounds clear to me. If it's not, let's chat.

As mentioned in pre-season communications, we will be playing the same nine for two to four weeks before switching to a new nine. This will give us the opportunity to attack a nine with the lessons we learned the prior week and HOPEFULLY play smarter and better! Let me hear from you on the issue of what you think the ideal number of weeks to repeat on a nine is before moving on.

The clubhouse was hopping after the round too! Getting there earlier next time, I don't know about you but I plan to grab something to eat. If anyone has suggestions on what to eat, let's hear it!

Tomorrow!
04/21/02 - Tomorrow, tomorrow, ... you're only a day away! I can't wait!! Okay, I can wait. Maybe!

I want everyone to download the Scorecard Procedures and take a look at the Scorecard Example (Card Example) which can be found in the Downloads section on the right side of the page. Aside from that, we will be passing out Rules and guidelines before the round. We will post handicaps and match information at the course but since this will be our first time, I'm not sure where it will be just yet. Keep your eyes peeled!

You old timers - introduce yourself to the new members and help them feel welcome. Newcomers, introduce yourself to the old guys! If you have a question about how things go, ask a couple of people who act like they know what they are doing. Then ask one of the coordinators for verification!!!

Give Me Your Money!
04/21/02 - All players - pay me. Do not pay the course. As has been our procedure in prior years, you will be asked to pay me several weeks in advance (most players like to pay 4 to 5 weeks at a time). I will maintain a record of your account and will deduct $20 each time you play. After each round, I will record your scores and pay the course $20 for each score recorded in one payment. Please do your best to keep on top of your account.

Also, if you were unable to send in your league registration fee ($45), remember to bring it to the course on Tuesday.

Handicapped Handicaps
04/21/02 - Clearly stated in the league flyer and the signup sheet and in early league-related emails, we are going to use last year's handicaps for those players that are returning from last year (sounds obvious). For those who are new to the league, handicaps were to be established prior to the beginning of the league. There are quite a number of players who have not turned in the required number of cards yet so will therefore be playing with a 0 handicap until 5 nine-hole rounds are turned in. Handicaps will also be accepted from officially established sources (USGA, any course). However, this info MUST be submitted PRIOR to the round on Tuesday.

The 2002 Season Approaches
04/1/02 - Well, I've finally gotten the web page updated (applause can be heard throughout the Clear Lake area and in some small but confused pockets of Cleveland!)! This is the go-ahead to begin registration for the 2002 season. To the right, you will find in the Downloads section, the League Flyer and Sign-up Form. Print the Sign-up Form, fill them out and send or bring them to the addresses indicated. Print a couple of the League Flyers and post them around your office area (just hide them from the really good players!). The deadline for sign-up is April 17th so don't delay!

There are a number of changes this year that you will read about. First, we are moving from Clear Lake Golf Course to Magnolia Creek Golf Links. This will be a dramatic improvement in the playing conditions and treatment from the management!

The costs have gone up this year from last year. The sign-up fee is $45 per person - the first increase that I've ever seen in the five years I've been in the league. The weekly fee will be $20 instead of $16. However, we were told that Clear Lake was going to be charging $24 this year so we are actually saving $4 per week (you'll have the sign-up fee increase paid for in less than two weeks!).

Finally, we're searching for a new name for the league. We used to be entirely Lockheed Martin employees. Well, as contracts change, many of the players stayed in the same jobs but changed badges. We are now accepting membership from any JSC-associated employee. This means that if you work for a company that is doing business at Johnson Space Center - either as civil servant or contractor, you qualify as a member of the league. We will need to restrict the number of teams to a reasonable number but let's cross that water hazard when we come to it. Suffice it to say that we will never put more than two foursomes on a teebox.

Let me know if you have any questions. You can click on the Coordinators link in the Info section on the right side of the page to email me (Chris), Chip, or both of us.

2001 League Results
10/29/01 - Barry Brewer and Scott Rodriguez of Wandering Albatross won first place, Chip Heinol and Chris Slovacek of Tech Attack won second place, and Danny Blanchard and Jim Fox of Putt Kickers won third place. Congratulations!
